Airport at odds with local healthcare district on taxes
George Berge wants to have his own Boston tea party. Berge is not going to throw tea into Big Bear Lake but like the Sons of Liberty, he is mad about taxes.Berge vented his frustration at the Sept. 12 airport district board meeting about a letter from the attorney for the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District. Marc Hurd's letter to the airport district was regarding possessor property tax. "They spent more money on preparing this document than they collect in the tax," Berge said about the healthcare district. The San Bernardino Assessor's Office collects $138 a year each in possessor property tax from each hangar renter. Most of the money goes to the county, but $45.30 goes to the healthcare district for Measure Q. The measure passed two years ago and with the healthcare district looking for more money to pay for a seismic retrofit and upgrade for the hospital, airport tenants have approached the airport board upset about the healthcare tax, said Airport Manager Garry Dokter.Joel Hall rents a hangar at the airport.
